How to Save Energy at Home and Spend Less on Utilities

Here are a few steps to help you cut your home’s energy consumption, keep utility bills low, and lead a more eco-friendly lifestyle. Not only are these changes good for our planet, but they can also add up to save you substantial money over time - and most of these upgrades can be accomplished in a day or less! Another reason to consider making the shift? Many energy-efficient renovations you can make to your home qualify for tax credits. Keep reading for a few of our favorite tips to save you money and reduce energy consumption.

1. Upgrade to Energy Efficient Appliances

Major Appliances are your home’s third largest energy hog - only behind your heating and cooling system and water heating. Replacing older appliances with more efficient models can be one of the most dramatic improvements you can make. Compare models when shopping around and go with the most efficient option.

2. Use Cold Water When Doing Laundry

Many of today’s detergents and fabric softeners are more efficient, meaning they don’t necessarily need the added strength of hot water. Using cold water means you won’t have to waste energy to start up the water heater and as an added bonus, washing clothes in cold water can help slow fading of colors and reduce shrinking of fabrics.

As temperatures warm up you can take it a step further and line-dry your clothes rather than using the dryer. Reducing your use of the dryer can save you money in operating costs - plus since line-drying is easier on your clothes, so you save the money that would have otherwise been spent on wear and tear.

3. Unplug Your Electronics

I’m guilty of forgetting to unplug charger cords or small appliances - but leaving those things plugged in when not in use can account for as much as 10% of a home’s energy use. Something as small as unplugging what you’re not using can make a big difference on your energy bills. Try taking special care to unplug things when you finish or plug your devices into a power strip you can switch off when not in use.
